So what is Invisalign?
Invisalign braces are the clear alternative to braces that can help you achieve a straighter smile. The system uses a series of clear, custom-made aligners which work by gradually moving your teeth into their desired position. The aligners are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth. These type of retainers are easy to wear and remove however must be worn for 22 hours a day. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. Retainers are worn for a two week period before being switched to the next set of aligners.
What are the aligners made of?
The aligners are made from a clean, strong, smooth, medical grade, non toxic plastic.
Is this treatment suitable for me?
To find out if you are suitable for this treatment you will require an initial consultation. At this appointment, your dental provider will discuss the issues you are having with your teeth and will then discuss the results you are able to achieve. If you are a suitable candidate, a treatment plan will be mapped out with your goals in mind.
You will then be required to attend a second appointment where photographs and impressions will be taken. The images and impressions are sent off and are then digitised into a 3D image (ClinCheck®). From these images your dental provider will prescribe the precise tooth movements throughout your treatment.
Once you have agreed to the proposed treatment plan, aligners are then custom-made for you. Each aligner is slightly different, moving your teeth gradually into their desired position. You aligners are to be removed ONLY when eating, drinking, brushing and flossing. Once your treatment is complete you will be fitted with Vivera retainers and will be required for check-ups every 3 months.
How much does it cost?
In most cases, the cost and treatment time is comparable to traditional braces. However, as with other medical treatments, only your doctor can determine the cost, based on your specific needs. Other factors may include your treatment goals, the difficulty of your case, how long you are in treatment, your orthodontic insurance coverage, and additional factors determined by your dentist or orthodontist. In Australia, the cost of treatment ranges from $6,000-$10,000.
Is this covered by insurance?
If your policy has orthodontic coverage, this should be covered to a similar extent as conventional braces. As medical benefits differ significantly from policy to policy, you should check with your health fund as to what benefit will be received. (Your dentist will provide you with a quote. This quote can be given to your health fund provider to determine your rebate).
How does the treatment work?
This treatment uses the latest 3D imaging technology, your dentist will be able to depict the complete series of movements your teeth need to go through to achieve a straighter smile. A series of custom-made aligners are then produced, which you simply change yourself every two weeks to gradually move the teeth.
How long will treatment take?
The length of treatment is dependent on the severity of each individual patient’s orthodontic issues. Treatment may vary from anywhere between six months to two years. The average treatment time is between 12 to 14 months.
Will the treatment be painful?
Most people will experience temporary, minor discomfort at the beginning of each new stage of treatment. This is a short term effect and is normal. It is typically described as a feeling of pressure.
Will the treatment affect my speech?
Initially like with all orthodontic treatment, the aligners may affect your speech but this is only a temporary affect and will only last a day or two. As your tongue gets use to having the aligners in your mouth, any lisp or minor speech impediment caused by the aligners will disappear.
How often will I be required to see my dentist?
