Bonding Composites For Dental Applications

More and more dental patients are demanding white fillings and we understand why! White fillings consist of special composite resin that adheres to teeth and is shaped and shaded to match the patient’s own teeth to assure a natural look. A filling can improve tooth structure whilst preventing further damage and decay.

Due to the levels of mercury present, amalgam fillings are viewed by many to be potentially toxic. Recent advancements in research allow us to achieve a more aesthetic and strong composite resin. This allows us to also place these restorations in areas of the mouth to withstand high biting stresses such as back teeth and molars.

Ceramic fillings — Cerec®

A mouthful of mercury can be completely transformed to give you a gleaming white smile.

At Cambridge City Dental, art and science become one with the latest in dental technology. Ceramic fillings are biocompatible, highly aesthetic, long-lasting and durable. CEREC® stands for chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramics and uses 3D imaging to create and fit white fillings in one appointment.

Ceramic fillings are biocompatible, highly aesthetic, long-lasting and durable.

  1. Step One
The defective filling and decay are removed from your tooth.

  2. Step Two
An optical image is acquired with a small camera, directly in your mouth. The restoration is designed onscreen using the image and is then sent to a milling machine. Diamond-coated instruments mill a ceramic block to reproduce the design.

  3. Step Three
After polishing, the new restoration fits precisely. A unique light hardens the bonding material, uniting porcelain and tooth. Polishing and glazing ensure a pleasantly smooth and natural feel. The colour and appearance make the special ceramic material blend with your tooth.

Perfectly bonded porcelain ensures an extremely long life for your teeth, providing maximum strength and great natural looks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Are the Benefits of CEREC® Dental Fillings?

CEREC® dental fillings have many benefits over other types of fillings such as amalgam and composite fillings. These include: They are made from high-quality ceramic, which is aesthetically closer to natural teeth than other types of filling material. This makes the tooth structure stronger, more comfortable and prevents further decay. Another benefit is that they are bonded to the tooth in one appointment, which is more convenient for the patient.

Finally, unlike amalgam fillings, they do not contain metals, which means they are also mercury-free. There are fewer concerns about allergies or side effects from ceramic white fillings than other filling materials.

Why Would You Need a White Filling?

Dental fillings are used to restore damaged teeth. It is a common method of treating tooth decay. Some patients may wear down their teeth due to age, or they may have developed cavities from a lack of brushing and flossing, to replace amalgam fillings and to have a gleaming white smile. In other cases, trauma such as a hard blow to the mouth might cause this damage. If this is the case, your dentist may recommend dental fillings.

How Long Does a Dental Filling Last?

Depending on the type of filling, most will last around 10 years or more. There are many factors that affect how long a dental filling typically lasts. These include lifestyle habits, dental hygiene and whether you grind your teeth. If you grind your teeth we have options to manage your grinding habit.

What Are the Different Types of Dental Filling Materials?

There are several filling materials available, these include silver amalgam, glass-ionomer, gold and white fillings. Tooth coloured fillings or white fillings are most popular. These use new resins and ceramic technology to match the shade of your teeth. White fillings are a simple procedure that can be performed in our clinic. Some patients may also have an allergy to dental amalgam, making ceramic an ideal filling material.

What are the Signs That You May Need a Dental Filling?

A white filling is used to restore teeth that have large cavities that are often caused by erosion or tooth decay. Symptoms may include sensitivity to cold foods, pain, food packing between the teeth, and the tooth breaking down over time. If you experience any of these symptoms then it is important that you book an appointment with us as soon as possible. Your dentist will also be able to advise you at your regular general dental checkups if you require a dental filling.

Do Fillings Make Your Teeth Whiter?

Unlike teeth whitening services, a white filling won't make your teeth whiter. The process of ceramic fillings allows for the colour to blend in with your existing teeth. As a result, this colouring can vary from patient to patient. Your teeth can be whitened before you have your amalgam fillings replaced so that the new filling is much whiter and can blend in with your whiter teeth.
