What is required for successful dental implants?

  • The jawbone must have enough available bone for dental implants to be successful. When you lose a tooth, bone loss increases over time.

  • When the bone is not tall or wide enough under your gum, a bone augmentation procedure is required.

  • Cambridge City Dental are qualified to design and fit dental implants and have years of experience in bone augmentation to help patients across Perth have successful implant treatments.

What exactly is bone augmentation?

  • When grafting bone-like materials, the surrounding bone will grow or encourage cells around it to actually turn into bone. Natural bone grafts transplant blocks of your bone or cells to fuse to the jaw.

  • Implants will be placed after the grafted bone has become strong enough which usually takes several months.

Typical procedure involving bone augmentation

  • A bone graft is carried out and the gum tissue is lifted above the bone-deficient area. Using fixated screws, a block of grafted bone is taken and put into place. The area of bone loss is small, so augmentation material and special covers are placed to the area to aid growth. To protect the surgical area, the gum tissue is stitched back into position with dissolvable stitches.

  • After your procedure, you will be given pain relief medication and you will be told to avoid eating certain foods. You will also be advised on ways to help the area heal, which usually takes around six to nine months. Once fully healed, the fixated screws are removed and your implants can be placed.

  • When there is not enough bone to support the implant, bone is usually taken from your chin or mouth area to rebuild the lost bone. A CT scan of your bone will be taken to provide 3D images. The area where the bone augmentation is needed and the area where your bone will be removed will be numbed under local anaesthetic.

  • We carry out a variety of bone augmentation procedures to build up your bones in order for dental implants to be fitted. Bone augmentation involves adding special materials to the jaw and can be your own bone or bone-like alternatives.
